Cognition and Learning
Cognition and Learning is one of the four broad areas of need identified in the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Code of Practice. It relates to how a child or young person thinks, learns, understands, and processes information.
Children and young people with cognition and learning needs may find learning more difficult than others of the same age. They may require additional support to develop skills such as reading, writing, numeracy, memory, processing information, problem-solving, and understanding new concepts. Some may learn at a slower pace, while others may experience specific barriers in particular areas of learning.
This area of need includes:
-
Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
-
Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
-
Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
-
Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dyspraxia
Support is tailored to individual strengths and needs and may include adapted teaching approaches, targeted interventions, assistive technology, and additional adult support. Early identification and appropriate provision help ensure that children and young people can make progress, develop independence, and achieve their full potential.
