Physical and Sensory

Physical and Sensory is one of the four broad areas of need identified in the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Code of Practice. It relates to children and young people who require support because of a physical disability or a sensory impairment that affects their access to learning and the wider school environment.

Children and young people with physical and sensory needs may experience difficulties with mobility, coordination, fine or gross motor skills, or managing physical tasks. Others may have a visual impairment, hearing impairment, or a multi-sensory impairment. Some may also have sensory processing differences that affect how they respond to sound, light, touch, taste, or movement.

These needs can impact learning, independence, communication, and participation in everyday school activities. However, with appropriate adaptations and specialist support, children and young people can access the curriculum and develop confidence and independence.

Support is tailored to individual strengths and needs and may include specialist equipment, environmental adaptations, access arrangements, therapeutic input, and collaboration with health and specialist services.
