Communication and Interaction is one of the four broad areas of need identified in the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Code of Practice. It relates to how children and young people communicate with others, understand language, and interact socially.
Children and young people with communication and interaction needs may experience difficulties with speech, language, or understanding what others are saying. They may find it challenging to express their thoughts, follow instructions, interpret social cues, or engage in conversations and relationships. These differences can affect learning, confidence, and participation in school life.
This area of need includes:
-
Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
-
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
Support is tailored to individual strengths and needs and may include adapted teaching strategies, visual supports, structured routines, small-group or individual interventions, and specialist advice from speech and language therapists or other professionals.
