Beechwood Primary School

Our Curriculum

At Beechwood Primary School, our curriculum is based on the September 2014 National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 & 2 and the Early Years 2021 framework in Reception. Our rigorous, well planned curriculum, combined with high quality teaching, ensures that children are well prepared for life; equipping them to be thoughtful citizens and life-long independent thinkers and learners who can confidently face the challenges of the technological world. Enjoyment is a key feature of our lessons and teachers plan interactive, exciting lessons that engage and challenge all children. Where possible, we link units and topics so that children can make connections in their learning.

Spiral Curriculum

In all of our subjects, we have designed our curriculum as a spiral curriculum with the following key principles in mind:

Cyclical: Pupils return to the key knowledge and skills again and again during their time in primary school.

Increasing depth: Each time a skill is revisited it is covered with greater complexity.

Prior knowledge: Prior knowledge is utilised so pupils can build upon previous foundations, rather than starting again.

Long Term Plan

Whilst our long term plan gives an overview of which units are taught throughout the year, it does not reflect the breadth of oppurtunities that children are provided with alongside these units. Throughout the year children's learning is enhanced through trips, visitors and additional activities which strengthen the depth of their knowledge and provide them with new experiences.

Our long term plans have been carefully designed on a three year rolling cycle to take into account that in some years we have mixed age classes in years 3, 4 and 5. Please see this year's long term plan below.Â
